The First Circle A reproduction of prison inmates being exercised, painted by Van Gogh. David's painting was inspired by Alexander Solzhenitsyn's novel titled "The First Circle". The work speaks of talented people who are purposely forced not to fulfill their personal destinies, dreams, and aspirations. Although the painting alludes to political prisoners, on closer examination the theme could apply to anyone who has experienced a "dream deferred."
