Alma Norman's husband is Jamaican and she'd returned with him to live there after their
marriage. She says. "It's an extraordinarily beautiful island where I spent the most
satisfying years of my teaching career, and made good friends. In many
ways I owe much of what I am to my Jamaica experience."
And yet - living in
a tropical place taught Alma that she really is a Northern person, and
this poem expresses the acute homesicknesses that suddenly overwhelmed her.
