Where I Used To Live
I thiink of Toronto, where I used to live, years ago. Trawna,
Tor-on-toe.
Tripping off my third-generation tongue easy feat, fer shur, eh? and
the Canadian anthem that Ive almost sung in China but I was too modest
and shy. I stand on guard for me, myself and I. Spadina and Bloor.
Whatever happened to her? I traded her in for St. George and Dupont and
toyed with the idea of Front (at Lawrence where the market is and the
Cineplex, whee!). But I thought it was getting too upscale (for me).
Then I moved to Riverdale mmm, to walk past Chinatown and the scent of
stale, scaling fish competed with the fetid fruit but I never changed my
walking route past Parliament and Gerrard, although sometimes it was
hard not to, to Cabbagetowns gardens and I would feel my icicle heart
begin to unharden, to Carlton as the streetcars would glide by, and I,
jaywalking like stealing bases to homeplate, the Cineplex at northwest
Yonge. Toronto, Toronto, Toronto, a slip of my third-generation tongue.
