Canada Dreams
Just Us in the Balance
How many silver pieces
Balance a cross-rod level
To a living child?
Who would sell their sons for money
And exchange their girls for coins?
What prices would we merit
At the dawning of our lives
If we had been spent merchandise?
All that energy and vigour,
All those clear and questioning brains
Sold for profit: for whose gains?
Once a master, stripped naked of clothes,
Cheerfully redeemed a sickly baby
With his own life.
