David Alexander

Shalmeerhee

A fifth generation African-Canadian, Alexander was born in Windsor, Ontario in 1946. He studied at the Ontario College of Art and the University of Toronto. Alexander has been exhibiting his paintings and writing poetry for three decades. Often, his poems accompany and compliment his visual works.
Alexander's subjects range from the Underground Railroad themes, to faith-journeys; from the beauties of nature to the consequences of human choice. In 1982 Alexander invented a new aesthetic-based language called Yankahla. He is a high school teacher in Belleville, Ontario.
